Excursions from
Montego Bay

Most Montego Bay excursions are half-day trips within an hour of the city: bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae, the Luminous Lagoon at Falmouth after dark, Rose Hall Great House, and catamaran cruises off the Hip Strip. Full-day trips east to Dunn’s River or west to Negril are both comfortably doable.

Bamboo rafting, Martha Brae

A slow hour and a half poled down a shallow river on a bamboo raft. Genuinely relaxing rather than thrilling, and the guides are usually excellent company. About forty minutes from town.

Luminous Lagoon, Falmouth

One of a handful of bioluminescent bays in the world. You go after dark, the water lights up where it is disturbed, and you can swim in it. Best on a moonless night.

Rose Hall Great House

An eighteenth-century plantation house with a well-known ghost story attached. Worth it for the history and the setting; the evening candlelit tour is the better version.

Catamaran and snorkel cruise

Half a day on the water with snorkelling, usually an open bar and a lot of music. Fun rather than serene, and the standard choice for groups.
