Rose Hall Great House

Rose Hall is the restored great house on the hill above the Montego Bay coast
road, and the tour is really two things at once: a straight look at how the
plantation-owning class lived in the eighteenth century, and the telling of the
island’s best-known ghost story.

That story belongs to Annie Palmer, remembered as the White Witch of Rose Hall
— mistress of the plantation, said to have buried three husbands and taken
lovers among the enslaved people she held. How much of it is history and how much
is folklore is a live argument, and the guides are fairly honest about the
difference.

Day or night

The daytime tour is the architectural one: the restored rooms, the furniture,
the gardens, and the view back down over the coast. The night tour is the
theatrical one, run after dark by candlelight, and it is the one people talk about
afterwards. Both end in the cellar, which is now a bar called Annie’s Pub,
where the house cocktail is a rum punch called Witches Brew.

When it runs

Day tours run Monday to Saturday, roughly 9:15am to 4pm, and the house is closed
on Sundays and public holidays. Night tours run Wednesday to Saturday evenings,
from about 6:30pm. Tell us which you want and we will put the driver on the right
schedule.
