Rocklands Bird Sanctuary

Rocklands is a garden in the hills at Anchovy, about twenty minutes above
Montego Bay, where wild hummingbirds have been fed by hand for decades. You sit on
a covered patio, hold out a small glass feeder, and they come to your finger to
drink. Among them is the red-billed streamertail — the doctor bird, the
national bird, the one with the long trailing tail feathers.

The birds are wild and free-flying, so nothing is guaranteed. In practice they
come in every quarter of an hour or so. What is asked of you is to sit still and
be patient, which is why this works far better with children who can manage that
and far worse with children who cannot.

Current status

The sanctuary has published that it is roughly 95% operational following
Hurricane Melissa. The covered patios are open and the birds are feeding as
normal. The walking trails remain closed. We will confirm the position before we
take you.

Who it suits

Anyone with an interest in birds, photographers, and people who have had enough
of boats and waterfalls for one week. It is quiet, shaded, and close enough to
Montego Bay to do in a morning and still have the afternoon.
