Tour · Nine Mile, Saint Ann, Jamaica
Bob Marley’s Nine Mile
Nine Mile is a small village high in the Saint Ann hills, and it is where Bob
Marley was born, spent his childhood, and is now buried. The site takes in the
one-room house he grew up in, the rock he wrote about, and the mausoleum where he
and his mother lie.
The guides are Rastafarian and mostly from the district, and the tour is
personal rather than institutional — family stories, the house furnished
much as it was, and a good deal of music. Shoes come off in the mausoleum and
photography is not permitted inside it. Both are taken seriously and worth knowing
before you arrive.
The drive is the commitment
This is a proper day out, not a morning. The road climbs steadily into the
interior and the last stretch is narrow, twisting and rough in places. Roughly an
hour and a half from Ocho Rios, and around two hours from Montego Bay. You are on
site for something over an hour, so most of the day is the journey — though
the drive itself, up through the cockpit country, is genuinely part of it.
Who it suits
People who care about the music, and who would rather see where it came from
than visit a museum about it. If nobody in your group is especially interested,
say so and we will point you at something closer to home.
