Blue Hole & Secret Falls

A limestone gorge in the hills behind Ocho Rios where the river has cut a run
of deep pools the colour of nothing else on the island. You swim in them, jump
from the ledges into them, and swing out over them on a rope tied to a tree. It is
the opposite of Dunn’s River: no staircase, no handrail, no queue of several
thousand people.

The site sits inland from the coast road, which is why it stays quiet. From an
Ocho Rios villa the drive is about forty-five minutes. From Runaway Bay roughly an
hour, from Falmouth an hour and a half, and about two hours from Montego Bay or
Rose Hall — worth knowing if you are staying on that side, because it makes
for a long day out.

What you actually do

You spend around an hour and a half at the site. Guides walk you up through the
pools, show you which ledges are safe to jump from and how deep the water is under
each one, and talk about the river and the area as you go. How much you throw
yourself off is entirely up to you — plenty of people swim, float and never
jump at all, and nobody is pushed into it.

Whether it suits you

Minimum age is six. Being able to swim helps, but it is not essential:
life vests are available and there are shallower pools to stay in. There are
restrooms and changing facilities on site, so you are not getting back into the
car wet.

What to bring

Swimwear, closed-toe shoes you can swim in — the rock is slick and sharp
in places — a towel and dry clothes, sunscreen, and a camera you are happy
to get wet. Bring some cash for the optional stop on the way back.
