Tour · Montego Bay, Saint James, Jamaica

Beach Horseback Riding

You ride out from the stables, down through open country to the shore, and
then straight on into the sea. The horses walk in until they are swimming and you
are in the water with them, which is the part everybody remembers and the reason
this is the excursion we send families on more than any other.

It runs on the north coast, with stables serving the Montego Bay, Rose Hall,
Falmouth and Runaway Bay stretch, so wherever you are along that coast the drive
is short.

How the morning goes

You are collected from your villa or hotel and driven to the stables. A guide
matches you to a horse based on what you tell them about your riding — and
“none at all” is a perfectly normal answer — and there is a
briefing before anyone mounts. From there it is a trail ride through the
countryside, with the guides talking about what you are passing, then down to the
beach for the ride into the sea. Afterwards there is time to dry off before the
drive back.

Whether it suits you

No experience is needed. The horses are used to nervous first-timers and the
guides stay with the group throughout. If you have ridden before, say so and you
will get a horse with more in it.

Operators on this coast set their own limits and they differ: minimum age is
usually five or six, and weight limits sit somewhere around 230 to 250 pounds. We
confirm the exact figures for your group with the stable before anything is
booked, so nobody is turned away at the gate.

What to bring

Swimwear under long shorts or light trousers — bare legs and a saddle are
a poor combination — closed-toe shoes you do not mind soaking, a towel and a
change of clothes, sunscreen, and a camera you trust near water. Leave anything
you would hate to lose at the villa.
