Tour · Ocho Rios, Saint Ann, Jamaica
Dunn’s River Falls
Dunn’s River Falls is the waterfall most people have in mind when they
picture Jamaica. It runs in wide limestone terraces for 183 metres — 960
feet — from the road down to its own beach on the Caribbean, and because the
water has shaped the rock into steps and pools rather than a single drop, you can
climb it rather than just look at it.
It sits a few minutes west of Ocho Rios town, which makes it an easy half day
from anywhere on the north coast and a comfortable one from Runaway Bay or
Discovery Bay. From a Montego Bay villa it is a longer run, and worth pairing with
something else on the same trip.
What is actually there
The park is more developed than first-time visitors expect. There is a beach
with lifeguards at the bottom of the falls, a splash pad for small children,
changing rooms and restrooms, lockers for hire, and shops selling water shoes,
waterproof phone cases and souvenirs. Food and snack vendors and a Blue Mountain
coffee stand are on site, along with a craft market, a nurse’s station, and
the shaded Banyan Tree and Tranquility Gardens areas if you want to sit out the
climb. There is a zipline on the property, and the park can be reached by boat
through its jetty as well as by road.
Getting there and getting in
There is car and coach parking, and the park advertises barrier-free parking,
restrooms and entry. Tickets are sold at resident and overseas visitor rates. We
handle the driver, the timing and the entry so you are not queuing at the gate
with a coach party.
Being honest about the crowds
This is the most visited attraction in Jamaica, and the single thing that
decides whether you enjoy it is whether a cruise ship is berthed in Ocho Rios that
morning. The same climb is a different experience at nine o’clock on a quiet
day than it is at midday with several thousand other people on the rock. Cruise
schedules are published in advance, and we plan around them rather than around the
weather. If the day you want is a heavy one, we will say so and suggest another.
