The Luminous
Lagoon
The Luminous Lagoon at Falmouth is one of a small number of bioluminescent bays in the world. Microorganisms in the water emit light when disturbed, so the boat’s wake glows and swimmers light up as they move. Tours run after dark and take about an hour, and yes, you can get in.
Go on a dark night
The effect is entirely about contrast, so a bright moon washes it out. A moonless night, or the week either side of a new moon, is dramatically better than a full moon. This matters more than the season, the weather or the operator you choose, and almost nobody tells you before you book.
Swimming in it
Most tours let you get into the water, and it is the part everyone remembers — you glow where you move. The lagoon is warm, shallow and brackish where the river meets the sea. Bring a towel and expect to be slightly muddy rather than pristine afterwards.
