Appleton Estate Rum Tour

Appleton has been making rum in the Nassau Valley since the eighteenth century,
which makes it one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries anywhere. The
estate sits in a broad green valley of cane fields ringed by limestone hills, and
the tour walks the whole process: the cane, the mill, the copper pot stills, and
the warehouses where the barrels sit ageing in the dark.

It finishes in the tasting room with three aged rums poured side by side
— typically the 4, 8 and 12 year — which is the part that makes the
drive worthwhile. There is a proper restaurant on site if you want lunch
afterwards rather than a snack in the car.

The drive

The estate is deep in Saint Elizabeth on the south side of the island. From a
Treasure Beach villa it is close. From the north coast it is roughly two hours
each way, so this is a full day and best paired with YS Falls or the Black River,
which are both nearby.

Practicalities

Tours run Tuesday to Saturday, roughly 9am to mid afternoon, so it is a weekday
outing and not a Sunday one. Allow two to two and a half hours on the estate
itself including the tasting and the shop. Children are welcome on the tour; the
tasting is for adults, and soft drinks are available for everyone else.
