Tour · West End, Negril, Westmoreland, Jamaica
Sunset at Rick’s Cafe
Rick’s sits on the limestone cliffs at the West End of Negril, where the
land drops straight into deep blue water and the sun goes down directly in front
of you. It has been the place to watch that happen since the 1970s, and on a good
evening it is genuinely one of the great sunsets anywhere.
The other half of it is the diving. There are three platforms — ten feet,
twenty-five, and the thirty-five-foot ledge — and anyone can jump from the
lower two. The spectacular dives you have seen photographs of are local
professionals who work the cliffs, and they are worth watching. Live music usually
starts around forty-five minutes before the sun goes.
Timing is the whole thing
Get there between two and four. The tour coaches and the catamarans arrive
together in the last hour before dusk and turn the decks shoulder to shoulder, and
by then the good spots have gone. Arriving early means a table at the rail, the
divers to yourself for a while, and an afternoon swim off the ladder.
We will be straight with you: Rick’s divides people. First-timers tend to
love it and a lot of repeat visitors find it crowded and expensive, and both are
fair. Drinks and food cost noticeably more than they do in town. If what you want
is a quiet sunset, the West End has smaller cliff bars either side of it and we
will happily take you to one of those instead.
