Tour · Pennycooke, Westmoreland, Jamaica
Mayfield Falls
Mayfield is not a single drop but a run of twenty-one small cascades and pools
along a shallow river in the Westmoreland hills, and you walk up through the
river itself rather than looking at it from a path. The water is cold, clear and
usually about knee to waist deep, and the guides take you pool by pool.
The one everybody remembers is the Washing Machine, a natural chute where the
current churns hard enough to hold you in place. There is also an underwater
passage between two of the pools if you want it, and plenty of places to simply
sit in the water.
Who it suits
People who would rather walk a river than queue at an attraction. It is quieter
and greener than the north coast falls, and the guides are from the district, so
the commentary is about the place rather than a script.
The drive is the trade-off: the road up into the hills is slow and narrow. From
Negril it is manageable, from Montego Bay it is longer, and either way it is a
half-day rather than a quick stop.
What to bring
Water shoes matter here more than almost anywhere — the stones are smooth
and slippery and the walk is entirely in the river. They can be hired at the
entrance if you do not have your own. Bring swimwear, a towel, dry clothes,
sunscreen, and some cash for your guide.
