Seven Mile
Beach, Negril
Seven Mile Beach runs along the western edge of Negril and is the longest continuous stretch of sand in Jamaica. The water is calm, shallow and clear for a good distance out, which makes it the most family-friendly beach on the island. It is public along its length, so it is lively rather than secluded.
Which end to stay on
The northern end towards Bloody Bay is quieter and backed by the larger resorts. The middle is the busiest and has most of the bars and beach restaurants. The southern end towards town is closest to the shops and the boat trips. None is wrong, but the difference between the north end and the middle is the difference between a quiet beach and a sociable one.
About the vendors
The beach is public, and vendors selling crafts, hair braiding, boat trips and other things walk it all day. A polite, friendly no works, and repeating it works too. This is the single most common complaint from first-time visitors and the single easiest thing to prepare for — it is not aggressive, it is just constant.
Beach or cliffs
Negril has two coastlines. The beach is flat, sandy and shallow. The West End cliffs, twenty minutes south, have no beach at all — deep water, ladders, and the best sunsets in Jamaica. Many people do a few days of each.
